A guardianship is a court-supervised administration for a minor or for an incapacitated person. There are two types of guardianships: guardianship of the person and a guardianship of the estate. A guardianship of the person allows for the guardian to make decisions regarding the ward’s health, education, maintenance and welfare. A guardianship of the estate allows for the guardian to make decisions regarding the ward’s financial and economic situation. A guardian may only be appointed by a court.
